The Latke Number

Mathematicians have the Erdos number, which honors the late Hungarian mathematician Paul Erdos, an astonishingly prolific writer of mathematical papers. During the course of his career, he authored approximately 1500 articles. More amazing still, he had 509 different collaborators. This is where the whole Erdos number thing comes in. Each of those 509 collaborators have an Erdos number of 1. To have an Erdos number of 2, you need to have collaborated with someone with an Erdos number of 1, and so on.

Which brings us, after only a short paragraph, to the coveted Latke number. I'm sure you'll see the parallels right away. Just as Paul Erdos himself had a Erdos number of 0, so too does genre author Jay Lake (aka [info]jaylake) have a Latke numberof 0. And all without eating any latkes. Anyone who has coauthored a work of genre fiction with Jay Lake (and eaten a latke in his presence) has a Latke number of 1. Anyone who has coauthored a work of genre fiction with anyone with a Latke number of 1 and eaten two latkes, either in the presence of that co-author or Jay Lake, has a Latke number of 2. And so on.

Obviously, we cannot necessarily prove the consumption of the latkes, but as a matter of personal honr (and to ferret out the gluten-sensitive writers) it is assumed to have occurred before an author seeks investiture or update of his/her Latke number.

NB: At no time will waffles be considered an acceptable substitute for latkes.

At some point (i.e., either when I get around to it, or if someone donates the money) this LJ will turn into a Paid Account, thus acquiring a LJ email address. When that happens, authors wishing to submit their bonafides for investiture will be able to write in.

As this begins, an ongoing list of Latke number authors will be listed on this LJ.

You do realize that I'm gonna have to cook latkes for Norwescon now...

Open invite to everyone - come find me and I'll share in Jay's presence...

Sounds like some fiendish competition for Wafflecon!

What about hamataschen. If I eat a hamantaschen in Jay's presence, will that count?

Hmm. Hamentaschen are smaller than latkes. I think you might have to eat two or three.

Alas, no. The position of the rules committee is quite clear: co-authorship and latkes.

No substitutions.

I've had my Irish Nana's Potato Pancakes. Would those count?

Not that I have the co-author credit, but maybe you could introduce fractional numbers. Eating the latkes with Jay, but no co-author would be a .5, while eating them without Jay, and no co-author credit would be a .25.

I've never collaborated with Jay, but I have eaten many latkes....

Ah, but have you ever collaborated with someone who collaborated with someone who collaborated with someone who collaborated with someone who collaborated with someone who collaborated with Jay?

and what does "collaborated" mean, exactly?

Did you really want to know?

Dirty way of saying it: He and Ruth Nestvold do it all the time. Regularly. In public. In front of minors, even. They've even done it next to me several time and I can't help but watch.

Bad way of saying it: Half the time Jay can't write his own stuff.

Clever way of saying it: Half the time Jay's figured out how to make someone else do the work.

Straight dope: It means co-authoring something.

I don't know if I'll be getting a Latke number soon, as I rarely collaborate.

I guess this means I'll have to make Jay an offer. What will my friends say?

Eating latkes? No problem. Collaborating with Jay (or, indeed, with anyone)? Potential problem. Never have written a collaboration. Hmmm...

Does translating the published translation of a Jay Lake story count as co-authoring a story with Jay? A linguistic/philosophical conundrum!

Though it's ultimately a moot point as I have not actually eaten a latke in Jay's presence, as far as I recall. :)
